Surrey County Council staff can volunteer for good causes after a pledge from the leader.

Councillor David Hodge is offering workers the opportunity to do voluntary work to benefit their communities.

Coun Hodge, who has been a Rotary International volunteer for more than 20 years, said: “Surrey is lucky to have so many people prepared to work tirelessly for good causes and they add something very special to the quality of life in the county.

“We should do everything possible to support and encourage this volunteer effort and that includes letting our staff give something back to their communities.”

His scheme will help staff who want to volunteer but cannot find the time outside of work, giving them two days a year to dedicate to volunteering.

Coun Hodge said: “I hope this scheme will make a real difference by encouraging lots more employees to volunteer, whether that be helping clubs and charities or enhancing the environment, and allowing those who already volunteer to do even more.

“In addition, the council will gain as those people doing selfless work will develop new skills that they can put to good use at work.”
